What AVP-Spokane Does
The Alternatives to Violence Project of Spokane is an experiential workshop that empowers participants to approach conflict in new and creative ways. Join certified volunteer facilitators to build community, decrease violence, and increase peace. All AVP Spokane workshops draw on the shared experience of participants; using interactive exercises, discussions, games, and roleplays to examine the ways we respond to situations where injustice, prejudice, frustration, and anger can diminish peace and lead to violence.

About Us
How Does it Work?
18-hour AVP Spokane workshops are transformative experiences. Participation costs are modest, and scholarships are readily available. Our goal is to increase peace in the world by exploring alternatives to violence with as many of our neighbors and friends as possible. Our only requirement is that no one can be forced to attend.
The Basic Workshop explores the five pillars of AVP: Affirmation, Communication, Cooperation, Community-building, and Transforming power
An AVP Spokane workshop can help you to: manage strong feelings like anger and fear, deal more effectively with risk and threatening situations, build good relationships with other people, communicate constructively in difficult situations, recognize the conflict management skills you already have, be true to yourself while respecting other people, understand why conflict happens, approach conflict in a more creative and less reactive manner, and consider your own relationship to systems of violence.
AVP also provides support for dealing with trauma, through an Advanced workshop that follows the Basic workshop. Whether a community member or someone who is incarcerated, we all have experienced trauma. The AVP Trauma workshop provides a safe and structured setting in which to focus on understanding and becoming resilient to trauma, learning to apply AVP skills to begin to address the impact of previously experienced trauma.
